Barnabus is buried with his wife in the Pennfield Baptist Cemetery. He moved to Pennfield with his family at about five years of age. It is said that he lived in the old family homestead. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist church. The petition for probate of his estate names his widow, Elizabeth, and five sons 'namely Benjamin Bucknam of the City of New York in the United States of America, Samuel E. Bucknam of Brooklyn, New York, Alfred Bucknam of Greenwood, Ontario, A. Judson Bucknam of New York aforesaid and the said William Nelson Bucknam your petitioner and three daughters, namely Mary E. March, wife of John March of the City of St. John in the Province of New Brunswick, Ann Smith, wife of Smith of the City of Saint John aforesaid, and P. Jane Bucknam of the Parish of Pennfield aforesaid, singlewoman².12 (E-mail from Jeff Bowden on the Bucknam family.)

Died in Pennfield (Charlotte Co.) on the 10 inst. Barnabas C. Bucknam 80th year. (St. John Daily Telegraph, 11 September 1882, in the New Brunswick Vital Statistics by D.F. Johnson, volume 57 #3834)

Barnabus C. Bucknam was born at Falmouth, Maine, 31st October, 1802 and came to this Province with his parents in 1805, first to Grand Manan (Charlotte Co.) where his father built four large barques, and in 1807 to Pennfield where he grew to manhood. He followed the business of his father, milling, ship building and farming. He was baptized by Rev. S. Robinson on July 14th, 1833 and took a great interest in the Church. He was many years a trustee of schools and gave land upon which to erect a school building when more accomodation was required. It was not until the spring of the present year that he began to fail. A series of colds caught during his active labors rapidly brought down his strength and terminated his career on Sunday Sept. 10th, 1882 in his 80th year. He was buried Tuesday 12 Sept. A sermon was preached by Rev. W.A. Troop. He leaves a widow, three sons (one in N.Y., one in Ontario, one in Pennfield) and three daughters (2 residing in Saint John, of whom Mrs. March is one) and one at the family home in Pennfield.

They lived at Falmouth & Columbia, ME and Pennfield, Charlotte Co., New Brunswick. Their first 5 children were born at Falmouth, the next two at Columbia, and the last four at Pennfield.8 ³Samuel settled at Pennfield, Charlotte County, New Brunswick in 1807. He took the Oath of Allegiance to the Crown in 1814 and received a Grant of 250 acres of land at Pennfield. About this time he purchased approximately 386 acres of land on Grand Manan Island from Edmund Cheney for 75£. Samuel later found that the land he had purchased from Cheney had been allotted but never taken up. He then petitioned, on 10 February 1820, the Lieutenant Governor of the Province of New Brunswick that he be granted Lot#62 on Grand Manan Island, stating that his former grant had been of inferior quality and that he had cleared eight acres of land on Grand Manan. His petition was denied on the basis of his not being a British Subject. Samuel petitioned again, on 28 December 1821 stating that he was born a British Subject in what is now the State of Massachusetts [now the State of Maine], and Çnever knowingly forfeited his Allegiance by Word or Deed¹. He went on to state that Çduring the American Embargo of 1808, he had obtained and carried two Cargos of Provisions and other Supplies to the Island of Barbados (then much in want of the same) in which dangerous and useful Service He was protected and assisted by his Majesties Frigate Cleopatra & other Vessels of Warin Consequence of which He would incur a heavy penalty if found in the United States.¹ He also stated that he had built eleven vessels, two of which he owned and that he was recognized as a British Subject by the Custom House and that he currently owned a Çfine vessel of 112 Tons at this time loading for the West Indies¹ at St. Andrews, Charlotte County. New Brunswick. He finally added that he had always performed his duty of a Militia man and a Parish Officer.²9 (Email from Jeff Bowden on the Bucknam family.)

Notes for William Bucknam:

When William arrived in this country is not known. That he was a single man may be ascertained from the court deposition taken 16 DEC 1662 when Robert Lincoln stated Çhave known him, ever since he came into the Country both single man and married man.¹3 There is conjecture that William came from London and that he had a brother John who married 31 December 1616 at St. Faith, London and was a member of the Merchant Tailor¹s Guild.²4 One of the early residents of Charlestown, William is recorded as having property within the town limits in 1638. The Charlestown Land Records show where he possessed ÇOne dwelling house with a garden plot, butting northeast upon the streeteway, and bounded on the southeast by Edward Carrington.¹ In 1649 he purchased from Francis Willoughby 20 acres on the Mytic side. The following year he purchased further land and meadows. On 2 April 1661, together with George Knower, he bought a forty acre and a fifteen acre lot of land at Malden from Capt. Notes for Lionel Worth:

ALL OF THE FOLLOWING IS FROM AN EMAIL FROM D Hart, Esq, Feb 1999 (DHartEsq@aol.com)

LIONEL WORTH1 was born circa 1627 in county Devon, England, and came to America as a young man perhaps fifteen years of age with two younger brothers.

It seems very likely, considering their youth, and the close association of the Coffin and Worth families in England and later in America, that following the death of their father in Plymouth in 1642 or 1643, the boys may have gone to America with Mr. Coffin, or followed soon afterward as conditions at Plymouth worsened. Lionel may have been named for Tristram's great uncle, Lionel Coffin of Brixton, Devon, All three families, Clement, Coffin, and Worth, settled in Salisbury. Lionel married there, about 1647, Susanna, daughter of Elder John Whipple of Ipswich. He could read and write in a day

when having an education was a distinction. However, in 1653, he was a dissenter when a vote was taken at a town meeting in regard to an annual tax

of ??24 for a free school at the meeting house, "the master to teach all children sent to him as soon as they knew their letters and began to read".

About 1655 the Worths moved to Newbury. Lionel served on the grand jury in 1662, and he was a fence viewer in 1663 with the authority to fine citizens who did not keep their fences in good repair. He made land transactions recorded in Salisbury in 1653 and in Newbury in 1655; and April 12, 1659, Mr. Worth bought for ??28, forty acres of upland in Newbury from Tristram Coffin of Salisbury.

The home of Lionel and Susanna was very likely constructed with a coating of clay over the frame timbers and bricks filling the spaces between the studs.

The ceiling was unfinished with a loft above and the floor boards were loosely fitted to permit the fireplace warmth to filter through the cracks. The first floor was divided into from two to four or more rooms. One house in Ipswich owned by a family in similar circumstances had "a hall, a parlor, a little parlor, a parlor chamber, a hall chamber, a little parlor chamber, a brew house, a buttery and cellar". The "hall", or main room, in the next century would become the kitchen, while the "parlor" in reality was a "best bedroom". Although there was not much elegance in the 17th century homes, the Worths very likely furnished their home comfortably with items brought from England. In the main room the family cooked, ate, worked and slept. The heart of this room was the great fireplace with large pots weighing as much as 40 to 68 pounds and made of brass or copper. These were used for washing, soap - making, candle-dipping and cooking. There too was the spinning wheel as well as the other equipment for making the homespun clothing for the family. Hanging on the walls were the sword, musket, and the fowling pieces. The focal point of the parlor, called the "fine room", was the large, beautifully curtained bed along with a "cubbered" displaying tableware of silver, pewter and wood. Other furniture included a table, some stools, and a storage chest. Chairs were rare luxuries and there probably was no clock. All families of culture owned books, and Lionel's inventory enumerated the Bible and books by Perkings, Dod, Preston, and Dr. Gouge. There very well may also have been a Psalm book.

Lionel died in Newbury June 29, 1667, leaving a will, and his widow probably remained to run the farm until May 1688 when she entered into an arrangement

with her son John. Lionel's estate totalling Ü447, 13s was a substantial amount for 1667.

Mr. Worth's will, proved September 24, 1667, by John Whipple Sr. and Samuel Poore: To daughters Susanna, Mary, Judith and Sarah, Ü10 each, at age 21 or

marriage: to son John, plowing land by the dismal, half the pasture ground, and half his meadow at 21; to wife Susanna, his dwelling house, orchard, barn

and half the land, all the movables, and if she sell, his son John to have the refusal; his wife and his brother John Whipple, executors. Witnesses, William

Sawyer, Samuel Poore and John Whipple Sr.

Inventory of the estate of Lionel Worth, who deceased 6:5:1667, taken 9:5:1667, by Joseph Hills and John Bayley, and allowed September 24, 1667, upon oath of the widow: "Dwelling house, barn with 10 acres of land, Ü100; 8 acres at Dismall, Ü40; 30 acres of pasture, Ü60; Boggi medo, Ü60 and on Salsbury syde, Ü30; 3 hay lot in Plumbe Iland, Ü20; domestic animals, beds and bedding, furniture, sea chest, sword, books, wearing apparel, cloth, corselet & leather coat; grain, etc. Debts owing the estate, Daniel Lunt, Tristram Coffin; debts due the estate to Mr. Woodman, Capt. Gerish, Serg. Knight; total, Ü477, 13s."

"Widow Worth to John Worth, Oct. 13, 1693; Susanah Worth of Newbury for good causes and considerations hereunto moving especially in consideration of bill

given by John Worth her son of the same town, which said John hath obliged himself to perform for her comfort during her natural life, said John to provide and keep in repair a suitable habitation on the land where the said Susanah now dwells and provide sustenance, maintainance, food, suitable raiment, medicine and care for said Susanah as her condition may require during her natural life, which shall be done by his heirs as well as by him. If Susanah shall remove from said place and provide for herself, then John &c shall be free from said provision and engaged to pay to her during her natural life the sum of ten pounds per annum, or more if necessary. In full payment she has given her son John Worth all her houseing, barn, orchard, lands, meadow ground in Newbury or Salisbury which was given and granted to her by her deceased husband Lionel Worth, also all the rest of movable estate, cattle, household stuff and utensils of husbandry, except what silver and linen said Susanah hath by her, 1 May 1688." Signed Susanah Worth (and seal) and John Worth. Wit: Nehemiah Jewett and Eleanor Baily. Acknowledged by Susanah Worth, 19 Mar. 1693. (Essex Co. Deeds 9:152) Her will was proved August 10, 1693, Newbury.
